HISTORY

The City of Arts and Sciences, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and inaugurated in 1998, was conceptualized by José María López Piñero, a history of science professor at the University of Valencia. His idea was to create a place that everyone could visit and enjoy learning. The architects of the project, Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, along with the engineers Alberto Domingo and Carlos Lázaro, travelled the world to observe comparable structures to present the public with a suitable solution. With a surface area of 350,000m2 and a length of nearly 2km, the project, often referred to as a city within a city, bears the distinctive stamp of Calatrava.

THE BUILDINGS

There are 7 parts which form the complex: the Palau de Les Artes Reina Sofía (the main building representing the art, music, dance and theatre), The Hemisferic (shaped like an eye), the Umbracle (a landscaped walkway with an art gallery), the Museu de les Ciéncies Príncipe Felipe (shaped like the skeleton of a dinosaur, where VDS2024 will take place), the Agora (it has temporary exhibitions), The Puente de l’Assut de l’Or (it has a 125m high pylon and is the highest point in the city) and the Oceanografic (it is the largest oceanographic aquarium in Europe with 110,000m² and 42 million litres of water).
